Eighty local growers attended presentations in Sunraysia last month to learn more about the insecticide Movento, a product by Bayer CropScience .

With the recent label extension to include citrus, mangoes and onions, Bayer CropScience took the opportunity to educate local growers on the benefits of using Movento insecticides to protect against sucking pests.

Movento insecticides are two-way systemic products which present a new mode of action, eliminating crossresistance issues for growers and ensuring long-lasting control. Because of this two-way system, Movento insecticides move upward and downward throughout the entire plant system, allowing the product to reach vulnerable parts of the plant that others are unable to do.

Movento insecticides are also strongly compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems and complement the work growers are undertaking in this area. It is also important to note that Movento insecticides do not have significant adverse effects on the majority of beneficial insect species.

A leading citrus grower in the Sunraysia region, Bruce Dickie, who has previously undertaken field trials using Movento insecticides on his property, hosted the launch at his farm and said that there was a great response from local growers.

“I thought the workshop was very well presented by Bayer CropScience Senior Development Specialist, Shane Trainer. I have previously used Movento in field trials on my property, and while at the time we were not targeting any specific problems, it seemed to work well. I envisage using
Movento in the future and believe it to be a cost-effective product.

“I invited my pest scout to the workshop as he provides advice to both myself and other property owners in the area, so I thought it was important that he attend the workshop to hear first-hand how Movento works. I rely on him for guidance on the appropriate course of action when I have a build-up of pests or diseases, including which products and rates to use. He was impressed with the product, and can see it having a real fit in the area.

"We are currently having some problems with red scale, so we’ll certainly consider using Movento to fix the problem,” says Dickie.

Bayer CropScience Territory Sales Manager, Mark Goldsack, said that the workshops gave them an ideal opportunity to discuss the results of the new Movento citrus insecticides with key growers in the citrus industry.

“With 80 local growers attending, this represented approximately 50% of the full time growers in the region, which highlights the interest that local growers have in Movento.

“The workshops gave growers an opportunity to learn directly from the Development team about the advantages of using Movento. After so many years in development, it’s exciting to see Movento now out in the field being used by growers and benefitting their businesses," Goldsack.
