Woolvi cattle business employs Cavalier pneumatic system for quiet handling in the yards

Supplier News

A pneumatic system developed by Cavalier Livestock Equipment is being used by a cattle operation for quiet handling of the cattle in the yards.

Based in Woolvi near Gympie, the cattle backgrounding and fattening operation is run by Mal Allsopp, a Brisbane investor who has 200 hectares of prime cattle country. Aiming at a capacity of 300 head and a throughput of 300 a month, Mal and his company, Barooga Projects (Rural) Pty Ltd, have developed the layout of the property with expert advice from local suppliers such as Glenn Smith of Budget Steel. Glenn also deals with Cavalier Livestock Equipment products.

Seeking a solution to provide for quiet handling of cattle, he became aware of Cavalier’s pneumatic system designed to control the gates and the crush. Providing maximum flexibility with minimum manpower, the system allowed the user to work the gates and the crush from anywhere in the yards.

The yards feature an all-steel construction with concreted races. Instead of a pound, the yards have an elongated race with a series of gates along its length, from where the cattle are drafted into six different pens. Stock is separated on the basis of weight, with the operation employing the Ruddweigh system. The cattle come over the scales where the vet treatments are done and the history including weight, daily weight gain since purchase and since their last yarding, is picked up through their tags.

The system has been designed for year-round operation with the stock bought anywhere from Gympie to Rockhampton at about 220kg. The stock is kept for 5-6 months for fattening using rye grass with supplements in the winter, and setaria, Rhodes grass and kikuyu with supplements in the summer. The cattle are turned off at about 450kg.

Mal explains that stock handling is an integral part of the business, which is efficiently facilitated by their system of laneways in the yards.
