EBV’s of Corriedale breeds from Coora Corriedales
The estimated breeding value (EBV’s) of Corriedale breed produced at Coora Corriedales are calculated based on various factors including weaning weight, maternal weaning weight, yearling weight, post weaning weight, yearling of fat depth, eye muscle depth, greasy fleece weight, fibre diameter. The EBV’s are also estimated based on the number of lambs born, lambs weaned, worm egg counts, lambplan indices and other traits according to lambplan.
Eye muscle depth (EMD) is measured in millimetres from the C site that is 45 millimetres from the centre of the spine. For a hogget, EMD estimates the genetic difference at the C site in about 70 kilograms of liveweight breed. The fertility trait is calculated by number of lambs born. This is a genetic difference between animals for number of lambs born. Estimated breeding value is calculated with the lambs weaned and scrotal circumferences.
Wool traits are measured wit the fleece weight (FW) that is the genetic difference between animals for greasy or clean fleece weight. A yearling estimate of fleece weight is done at 360 days old sheep. The fibre diameter is measured in terms of micron, this estimates the genetic variation between animals for fibre diameter.
