With a multi-million investment in King Borough Council’s state-of-the art ovals, Team Leader (Turf) Chris Hay must ensure they remain in tip top condition. It’s what the township of Kingston in Tasmania, some 10km out of Hobart, has come to expect of its recreational facilities over the years. One of the Apple Isle’s fastest fast-growing municipalities, some 16 ovals must be kept in prime condition – in line with community needs.

A key player in the year-round task is King Borough’s recently acquired 5.5m wide Croplands shielded boom turf sprayer equipped with a 500 litre tank

King Borough Council requires its Croplands turf sprayer to undertake between 10 to 12 hours a week. But it’s the close proximity of the ovals to local housing developments that requires attention to detail when it is out and about earning its keep.

Hay says he has “full confidence” in the turf sprayer’s ability to eliminate drift. The trailing unit dovetails neatly with the Council’s Kioti Daedong tractor that is equipped with special turf tyres to minimise its footprint when working on the two new ovals. He also said there had been “no issues” with the latest addition to their machinery inventory.

“When it’s spraying it just goes where we want it to go, plus it does all the functions that we need it to do, and more besides,” he said. “All up, it’s pretty reliable and easy unit to use, plus is very compact. “We can fold it up (hydraulically) to get it into transport mode within 20 seconds and it fits between the tractor’s tyre width – so it doesn’t take up any extra room in the shed,” Chris Hay added.

Meanwhile, Croplands Equipment ’s territory manager, NSW and Tasmania, Dave Farmer, confirmed the company’s shielded turf sprayers had industry-wide appeal because they “control any drift as they are completely covered,” thereby allowing them to be used in any weather conditions. The company’s turf sprayers are available in linkage, trailing or boom configurations and span either 4.5m or 5.5m, according to requirement.
