Since Border Leicester sheep are widely being used across the world in both purebreeding and crossbreeding systems. The coloured wool is highly appreciated by handspinners.
Colour shades are obtained by breeding a white sheep with selected traits for a coloured flock. Thus this white sheep has a high probability in producing lambs, where each carries a colour from their coloured parent. Later these lambs can mated with a coloured mate to produce white lambs and coloured lambs in a 50: 50 per cent ratio.
These colour carriers when mated to one another can produce coloured lambs in approximately one fourth of the lamb crop. Among major flocks that produce coloured wool have a variety of coloured wool. Delco Border Leicester also produces moorit colour shades of Border Leicester. If moorits are mated to white sheep, it results in white lambs. Later these lambs are mated to moorit, it produces 50 per cent of white lambs, 25 per cent of black based lambs and other 25 per cent of moorits.
