The federal government has announced that farmers who are suffering from financial hardship may be eligible for a welfare payment.
The announcement which was outlined in the Federal budget will be known as the Farm Household Allowance (FHA) and will take effect from July 1, 2014, replacing the previous Exceptional Circumstances Relief Payment according to ABC News.
The allowance will reflect the current Newstart rate and will involve a means test which has not yet been finalised. Under the current system, many farmers who were not receiving income were not able to receive the assistance due to the asset value of their farms.
