A new voluntary certification system was launched this week enabling premium grassfed beef to be appropriately labelled and branded.

The Pasturefed Cattle Assurance System (PCAS) has been launched by the Cattle Council of Australia which will enable producers to brand their cattle as “certified pasturefed” according to Farming Ahead.

The certification system will provide an industry-recognised standard which complies with specific production methods and provides consumers with the opportunity to differentiate from other products in the marketplace.

The PCAS certification lists a number of underpinning standards including on-farm feed requirements, traceability of cattle and pre-slaughter handling practices. Optional modules will also be available to promote claims referring to freedom from antibiotics and hormone growth promotants.

The Cattle Council believe that the certification will provide an invaluable marketing opportunity as well and the promotion of best practice within the industry.
