Leading Australian steel castings maker, Keech Castings has achieved two international accreditations on its first attempt.

The Bendigo-based Keech Australia, one of Australia’s most successful and progressive foundries gained the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System as well as the AS/NZS 4801 OH&S Management System, recognising the company's commitment to reducing environmental impact and improving safety performance. Keech had earlier earned the ISO 9001 Quality Management Accreditation in 2011.

Achieving both globally recognised accreditations on the first attempt was an enormous achievement, says Keech CEO Herbert Hermens.

Mr Hermens explains that many companies take several attempts to get their accreditation; therefore the achievement is a testament to the hard work and focus of Keech staff towards a common goal of being the best in their field and a first choice supplier to customers around the world.

According to Mr Hermens, improving their environmental performance and reducing safety risks through these accreditation programs reflect Keech’s commitment to a sustainable future while also giving customers worldwide confidence in their ability to meet global standards and taking care of its people and the environment.

Both accreditations required Keech to develop a number of programs and systems, which have now been integrated into their quality management system. The AS/NZS 4801 OH&S Management System process began with a safety gap analysis back in 2011, following which safety programs were implemented and procedures developed to fill the gaps.

Mr Hermens explains that better management, investing in energy efficient production systems and training in environmental awareness have all helped Keech to achieve the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System accreditation.

Some of the environmental initiatives implemented by Keech include expanding their sand and raw material recycling efforts, investing over $3 million to modernise their second foundry, designing and committing to installing energy efficient moulding, pouring, shake out and knock out systems, as well as purchasing a more efficient arc furnace and converting single-castings into multi-cavity moulds to reduce wastage and heating needed for pouring in their number one foundry.

Keech has also implemented a cultural change program to help the company meet its environmental goals. A ‘Think Green’ program promotes sustainable behaviour by staff.

For their efforts, Keech won Gold in the 2012 Sustainable Regional Australia Awards as well as the prestigious BRW Award for most successful private business in regional Australia based on its growth over the past three years and its commitment to investing in the region.

One of the country's most progressive foundries, Keech Australia produces high integrity steel castings for national and international mining, excavating, construction, agricultural, rail transport and defence industries.
