Nominations open for Australian Farmer of the Year Awards

Supplier News

The Kondinin Group announces that nominations are now open for the Australian Farmer of the Year Awards.

One of the most prestigious awards is the 2014 Livestock Producer of the Year sponsored by WFI. Australia being one of the most efficient producers of cattle, with the gross value for cattle and calf production at AU$7.4 billion, Kondinin Group and ABC Rural expect some commendable farmers and farming families to nominate for this award, one of eleven award categories at the 2014 Australian Farmer of the Year Awards.

WFI’s western operations manager and nominated judge John Snowball explains that an award such as the Livestock Producer of the Year allows WFI to recognise the outstanding endeavours of Australians who have made a significant contribution to their industry.

Farmers and farming families who are innovative, building sustainable approaches and adding value to the Australian community, economy, and their industry will be ideal candidates for the award category.

According to Kondinin Group's general manager Stephanie Shepherdson, the innovation shown in breeding, cost management, animal husbandry and strategic farming practice in Australia helps to maintain standards that are not only valuable to the local market, but allow demand for Australian products internationally.

One innovative and sustainable approach that is in strong demand locally and abroad is organic meat. ABC Rural says the demand for organic meat is ‘predicted to increase by eight times in the next three years’.

Matt Carter, along with his family, successfully took out last year’s award by achieving remarkable milestones, not just producing livestock but also tapping into the growing interest in organics. Shepherdson said the Carters stayed on top of the organic meat industry by implementing sustainable practices.

Nomination forms for the Australian Farmer of the Year Awards can be downloaded from www.farmeroftheyear.com.au. Nominations close Friday 27 June, 2014.
