Cattle breeding and spring calving at Mawarra Herefords

Mawarra Herefords  are engaged in spring calving and breeding Hereford herds of cattle. Mawarra Herefords target prime and store markets.

Cows are brought to Mawarra Herefords in October/November and taken in December to the bush lease. Calves are brought in the month of March when they are six to seven months of age.

The bulls at Mawarra Herefords are categorised into current, future and reference sires. The reference sires used at Mawarra Herefords include Charvel Lawful, Mawarra Hercules, Kaludah Miracle and Mawarra Kahlua. The Mawarra Kahlua is a bull with sound carcass qualities combined with performance and structural soundness. Mawarra Kahlua has played an important role in breeding several Mawarra herds.

Sires currently being used at Mawarra Herefords include Mawarra Nostalgia, Reedy Creek Debonair 206 and Kaludah Drought Breaker. Kaludah Drought Breaker was named senior and reserve Grand Champion. Mawarra Herefords expect the Mawarra Nostalgia to play a significant role in the future sires of the Hereford breed. Mawarra Nostalgia won Hordern Trophy at the Sydney Royal Show in the year 2004.

The future sires of Mawarra Herefords include Coothabara Magnum, Mawarra Sandstorm, Mawarra Sentimental, Mawarra Standout and Mawarra Trail Blazer. Coothabara Magnum has strong structure, muscling and EBV values. Mawarra Trail Blazer won the Grand Champion sash at the Hereford National Show and Sale in Wodonga in May 2008.
