Orbit Communications  has released its FrostAlert frost protection and warning systems, which are designed to prevent crop damage and warn farmers of any imminent frost conditions.

These frost prediction and warning systems eliminate the need to wake every few hours to check the ambient temperature. Instead, they activate an audible and visual alarm when field temperatures fall below a certain point, which is programmable by the user.

The frost prediction and warning systems feature switched outputs that are designed to minimise crop damage caused by frost.

These outputs can be used to turn a watering or fogging system on for a programmable period.

The frost prediction and warning systems are comprised of one or more remote temperature monitors, which are installed in those locations that require temperature monitoring.

The remote temperature monitors, which are typically powered by a renewable energy source and situated several kilometres from the house or shed, send temperature updates to a base station located in the house or shed on a regular basis.

The base unit compares the temperatures it receives from the various remote temperature monitors with the user-programmable trip temperature and alerts the user if temperatures are low.

Typically the trip temperature is set slightly above frost point of 2 or 3 degrees in order to give plenty of warning before a frost condition occurs.

In event that an alarm is activated, a watering or fog system can be used to help prevent damage caused by the impending frost conditions.

The alarm will automatically reset when the temperature rises one degree Celsius above the programmed trip temperature.

The frost prediction and warning systems have a built-in monitoring feature that examines the radio link between the house and remote temperature sensing unit at all times.

This ensures that any problem or error with the communication link is detected, and an alarm is subsequently activated.

Furthermore, the battery voltage in the remote unit is monitored and an alarm will be activated on those occasions that the battery voltage gets too low.
