A sorghum grower from Liverpool Plains won the prestigious Premer Shield for top yields this year.
Grower Simon Tourle’s harvest this sorghum season surpassed the yield estimate made by the judges who awarded him the Premer Shield in April.
Mr Tourle, who farms on his family’s property Glenkerry between Qurindi and Willow Tree, was presented with the prestigious trophy earlier this year when his 200-hectare crop of Pacific MR43 was judged at 8.3 tonnes per hectare.
According to Mr Tourle, with a test weight of 82, screenings of 3% and yield of 8.5 tonnes per hectare, he was more than happy with the result, given that he planted five weeks later than normal due to an extremely dry spring and very marginal planting rain. Despite setbacks to his sowing plans, he was confident the sorghum could perform when it came time to harvest in June.
Observing that the middle of summer can be a real test for the plant in northern New South Wales, he commented that a big downpour around Australia Day set the crop up for a big finish.
Mr Tourle’s sorghum crop was planted zero-till with a John Deere MaxEmerge planter on 76cm row spacings at 57,000 seeds per hectare. The seed was dropped in the trench with 40kg/ha of Gran Am and zinc monohydrate.

Nitrogen was pre-applied in the form of urea at 260kg/ha in August.
Though they have tried other sorghum varieties before, the growers are sold on Pacific MR43 due to its suitability in the Quirindi district. Being a low tillering variety, the MR43 can hang on in a tough year and yet still give a top yield. Mr Tourle has been growing this variety for six years and is extremely happy with it.
