New Zealand Farmer, Lance Gillespie, has been awarded the 2011 Rabobank Business Development prize for his project in enhancing human resources management at his dairy operation, Table Flat Holdings.

The Rabobank Business Development Awards are part of the Rabobank Executive Development Program, which is a business development course catered for Australasia’s leading agricultural producers.

“I see human resource management as the key to running a successful farm business in this challenging environment where we are competing for the right people to fill positions,” says Gillespie.

Gillespie’s successful project focused on improving the human resource management tools in his dairy farm businesses with the creation of a comprehensive Farm Operations Manual. The manual provided a detailed overview of the business, how it operated and where they were heading as well as clarity of roles and outlines of the skills required for different job positions.

“This manual allows us, as an employer and our employees and prospective employees to gain a better understanding of each other.”

The Farm Operations Manual would function as an invaluable “living document” for current and new staff, and would be reviewed, updated and modified over time. Gillespie plans to include modules on grazing management, calf rearing, tractor and machinery operations and maintenance and effluent management into the manual.
