Displaying a high level of commitment to workplace safety and protection, Sperian offers a range of respiratory products as part of their personal protective equipment or PPE range for industrial environments.

Sperian’s wide range of respiratory solutions is designed for worker comfort as well as ease of use and includes options such as disposable respirators, reusable respirators, self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), powered air purifying respirators (PAPR) and supplied air respirators (SAR).

The wide range of options also makes it difficult for companies to select the right respiratory products to suit their specific requirements.

Different industrial environments may be exposed to a range of harmful substances in the form of dusts, mists, fumes, gases, vapours or combinations of these emissions.

Selecting the correct respirator therefore depends on multiple factors but can be eased with Sperian’s easy 1-2-3-4 process.

1. Ensure there is sufficient oxygen present

Oxygen deficiency is a possibility in confined space work or fire-fighting situations. If oxygen levels fall below 19.5%, the atmosphere is considered to be oxygen-deficient. Always ensure an SCBA such as the Fenzy Xpro or Fenzy Aeris is used when working in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere.

2. Determine the physical and chemical properties of the contaminant

Current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the substance concerned or any other appropriate reference material will provide the data required.

3. Determine the concentration of the contaminant in the workplace environment

It is important to match the capacity of the respirator to the contaminant concentration in the workplace environment. Lower capacity respirators are only designed to work in concentrations up to a certain level. Ascertaining the concentration of the contaminant will help in the selection of an appropriate respirator for the workplace.

4. Assess the working conditions and exposure standards of the contaminant

References such as ‘Worksafe Australia Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational Environment’ or ‘OSH Workplace Exposure Standards and Biological Exposure Indices for New Zealand’ are available for consultation.

Exposure standards of various contaminants as per regulations can help identify the right kind of respiratory equipment required for any workplace.

Sperian Protection also offers the Sperian Respiratory Contaminant Guide that helps select the appropriate respiratory protection for a wide range of contaminants.

To check the corresponding safe working levels and type of respirator required for protection, one can select any specific contaminant from a comprehensive list.

The guide also includes in-depth educational information on various types of Sperian respirators, their working, filter classifications and fitting instructions.
