Alternate wetting and drying and panipipe farming techniques from Syngenta

Supplier News

Syngenta has formulated alternate wetting and drying and panipipe methodology for rice irrigation. The farming technique, an innovation of the International Rice Research Institute, is based on the understanding that differing depths of water are optimal for growth at different stages of the plant’s life. Very few stages of rice growth require standing water.

Panpipes are PVC pipes which are inserted into the field. These pipes allow the farmer to see the depth to which the soil is saturated. The pipe is 30cm long with a diameter of 10cm. The lower section of the panpipes are perforated to allow water to enter the pipe. The farmer can assess the water level in the soil by simply measuring the depth of water in the pipe.
