Meridian insecticide available from Syngenta

Meridian, available from Syngenta , is a broad spectrum insecticide that can be used for the control of African Black Beetle, Argentinian Scarab and Billbug in Turf. Meridian insecticide has 250 g/kg Thiamethoxam as the active constituent.

General instructions

Insecticide resistance warning:
For insecticide resistance management Meridian insecticide is a Group 4A insecticide. Some naturally occurring insect biotypes resistant to Meridian and other Group 4 insecticides may exist through normal genetic variability in any insect population.

The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the insect population if Meridian or other Group 4 insecticides are used repeatedly.

The effectiveness of Meridian on resistant individuals could be significantly reduced. Since occurrence of resistant individuals is difficult to detect prior to use, Syngenta accepts no liability for any losses that may result from failure of Meridian to control resistant insects. Meridian may be subject to specific resistance management strategies.

Mixing
Add the required amount of Meridian to clean water in half-filled spray tank with the agitator or by-pass in operation. Maintain agitation while filling tank with remainder of water. Agitate while spraying.

Application
To be effective Meridian requires to be placed as close to the soil surface as possible. Ensure that equipment is properly calibrated to give an even distribution at the correct volume.

Apply in a minimum of 500L water/ha. For optimum results use extremely coarse droplets [Turbo Floodjet (TF5) or TurfJet (TTJ10)].

Compatibility
As formulations of other manufacturer’s products are beyond the control of Syngenta, and water quality varies with location, all mixtures should be tested prior to mixing commercial quantities.

Precaution
Re-entry period: Do not allow entry into treated areas until the treated areas have been fully irrigated as per directions for use, unless wearing chemical resistant footwear and gloves.

Do not perform hand weeding and/or transplanting for 5 days after application unless wearing chemical resistant gloves. Footwear and gloves must be rinsed after each day’s use.

Protection of livestock
Meridian is dangerous to bees. Do not spray any plants in flower while bees are foraging. Do not graze treated turf/lawn, or feed turf/lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock.

Protection of wildlife, fish, crustaceans and environment
Meridian is toxic to certain aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply under weather conditions, or from spraying equipment, that may cause spray drift onto adjacent areas, particularly wetlands, waterbodies or watercourses. Do not contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the product or used containers.

Storage and disposal
Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool, well ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Triple or preferably pressure rinse containers before disposal. Add rinsings to spray tank. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point.

If not recycling, break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.

Safety directions
Meridian will irritate the eyes and skin. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. If Meridian comes in contact with eyes, wash immediately with water.

When opening the container and preparing the spray wear:

  • Cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist over clothing (i.e. double layer of clothing)
  • A washable hat
  • Elbow-length PVC gloves
  • Goggles

When using the prepared spray wear:

  • Cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist over clothing (i.e. double layer of clothing)
  • A washable hat
  • Elbow-length PVC gloves

Wash hands after use. After each day’s use, wash gloves, goggles and contaminated clothing.

Material Safety Data Sheet

  • If additional hazard information is required, refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet.

Directions for use

Restraints

  • Do not apply aerially
  • Do not apply if heavy rain is forecast

Situation

  • Lawns
  • Turf

Pest

  • First instar larvae of African Black Beetle (Heteronychus arator)
  • First and second instar larvae of Argentinian Scarab (Cyclocephala signaticollis)

Rate/ha

  • 800g to 1.2kg/ha in at least 500L water/ha

Critical comments

Apply prior to or at peak egg hatch, mid spring to early summer, or when small larvae are present. Ensure product placement as close to soil surface as possible.

Total application volume should not be lower than 500L/ha. For optimum results use extremely coarse droplets [Turbo Floodjet (TF5) or TurfJet (TTJ10)]. Preferably spray onto wet or dewy grass. Irrigate with 6 to 12mm of water commencing within 1 hour of application.

Pest

  • Larvae of Billbug (Sphenophorus brunnipennis)

Rate/ha

  • 800g to 1.2kg/ha in at least 500L water/ha

Critical comments

Monitor adult activity through late spring and early summer. Spray when numbers peak or when small larvae (4mm) are found in the thatch or surface soil.

Early application is essential to minimise grass damage due to feeding. Use the higher rate when pest pressure is high or second instar larvae are present.

Ensure product placement as close to soil surface as possible. Total application volume should not be lower than 500L/ha. For good results use extremely coarse droplets [Turbo Floodjet (TF5) or TurfJet (TTJ10)].

Preferably spray onto wet or dewy grass. Irrigate with 6 to 12mm of water commencing within 1 hour of application.

Not to be used for any purpose, or in any manner, contrary to this label unless authorised under appropriate legislation.

Withholding period
Do not graze treated turf/lawn, or feed turf/lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock
