Syngenta’s TILT XTRA fungicide controls fungal diseases in barley and wheat

TILT XTRA, available from Syngenta , is a Group C fungicide that controls certain fungal diseases of barley and wheat. TILT XTRA fungicide contains 250g/L Propiconazole and 80g/L Cyproconazole as two active constituents.

General instructions

  • Wheat - Stripe rust - susceptible varieties - apply when 10% leaves infected
  • Wheat - Stripe rust - moderately susceptible varieties – apply when 15 to 20% leaves infected

Mixing
TILT XTRA is an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation that mixes readily with water and is applied as a spray

  • Partly fill the spray tank with water
  • Start the agitation
  • Add the correct amount of product to the spray tank with the agitation system running
  • Continue agitation while topping up the tank with water and while spraying
  • Use the spray mix as soon as possible after preparation

Growing conditions
In general, TILT XTRA should be applied under good growing conditions with adequate soil moisture. TILT XTRA should not be applied to crops that are under stress (for example due to dry, wet, or frosty conditions, nutrient deficiency or high insect pressure), as this may give less than reliable results.

Spray timing
Always inspect crops to assess disease development immediately before spraying. The required results will be achieved from applications made in earlier stages of disease development. Applications of TILT XTRA should be made within the crop growth stages ranging from late tillering to early flowering (Z26 to Z62).

Application
TILT XTRA can be applied by boom spray or aircraft. Ensure complete coverage of all leaves and stem is obtained. The object of spraying is to keep the upper 2 to 3 leaves green and functioning through grain filling stage.

With boom sprayers, as a guide, apply in spray volumes ranging from 50 to 100L water per hectare. The use of flat fan nozzles is recommended using a fine to medium quality spray pattern, with pressures in the range 200-400kPa.

With aircraft, as a guide, apply 10 to 20L water per hectare with the lower rate being used when applications are made with a cross wind of not less than 5 knots. Use the higher rates when applying to dense crops.

Compatibility/Tank mixing
TILT XTRA is physically compatible with a wide range of products; however, the biological compatibility of these mixtures may not have been fully tested under all environmental and biological conditions.

A mixture of TILT XTRA with any other product may in some circumstances be ineffective or may cause damage. If tank mixes are to be used observe all directions, precautions and limitations on all products to be used.

As formulations of other manufacturers' products are beyond the control of Syngenta, and the quality of water may vary with location, all mixtures should be tested prior to mixing commercial quantities.

Fungicide resistance warning
TILT XTRA is a member of the DMI group of fungicides. For fungicide resistance management TILT XTRA is a Group C fungicide.

Some naturally occurring individual fungi resistant to TILT XTRA and other Group C fungicides may exist through normal genetic variability in any fungal population.

The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the fungi population if these fungicides are used repeatedly. These resistant fungi will not be controlled by TILT XTRA and other Group C fungicides, thus resulting in a reduction in efficacy and possible yield loss.

Since the occurrence of resistant fungi is difficult to detect prior to use, Syngenta accept no liability for any losses that may result from the failure of TILT XTRA to control resistant fungi.

Precaution
Re-entry period - Do not allow entry into treated areas until the spray has dried

Protection of wildlife, fish, Crustacea and environment
Do not apply under weather conditions or from spraying equipment that may cause spray to drift off the target crop, particularly when spraying in areas of close proximity to water bodies, watercourses or wetlands.

Do not directly spray over bodies of water. It is toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not contaminate dams, waterways or drains with the chemical or used containers.

Protection of livestock
TILT XTRA causes low hazard to bees. No special precautions are required.

Storage and disposal

20L pack size:
Store in closed original container in a cool, well ventilated area as cool as possible. Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Triple or preferably pressure rinse containers before disposal. Add rinsings to spray tank. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point.

If not recycling, break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.

100L pack size:
Store in closed original container in a cool, well ventilated area as cool as possible. Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight. Empty the contents fully into application equipment. Close all valves and return to point of supply for refill or storage.

Directions for use

Restraints

  • Do not apply more than 2 applications of TILT XTRA (or any other Group C fungicide) in any one season on the same paddock
  • Applications of TILT XTRA should be alternated with a fungicide containing a different mode of action

TILT XTRA can be used on barley and wheat to control different fungal diseases as follows:

Barley:

Powdery Mildew (Blumeria graminis) - 150 to 500ml

  • Spray at the first sign of the disease during the tillering stage. A repeat spray 21 to 28 days later may be required. Ensure thorough coverage of stems and leaves. Powdery Mildew: Higher rates provide longer protection.

Barley Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) - 500ml

  • Spray at the first sign of the disease during the tillering stage. A repeat spray 21 to 28 days later may be required. Ensure thorough coverage of stems and leaves. Powdery Mildew: Higher rates provide longer protection.

Net Blotch: Spot Form (Pyrenophora teres f. teres) and Net Form (Pyrenophora teres f. maculata) - 250 or 500ml

  • Apply after flag leaf is around 70% emerged and before infection averages 10% on the flag-2 leaf. Ensure thorough coverage of stems and leaves.

Barley and Wheat:

Leaf Rust (Puccinia hordei) - 250 to 500ml

  • Apply before disease levels reach 1% of flag-1 leaf area. Consider control if disease is greater than 5 to10% on any lower leaf layer. Use higher rates under high infection pressure or when longer residual protection is required. Lower rates are effective under low disease pressure, but have reduced residual effect. Ensure thorough coverage.

Wheat:

Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis) - 250 to 500ml

  • Spray between jointing and end of flowering when 10 to 20% of leaves are infected. A repeat spray 21 to 28 days later may be required. Use higher rate under high infection pressure or where longer residual protection is required.

Powdery Mildew (Blumeria graminis) - 150 to 500ml

  • Spray at the first sign of the disease during the tillering stage. A repeat spray 21 to 28 days later may be required. Ensure thorough coverage of stems and leaves. Higher rates provide longer protection.

Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis) - 500ml

  • Apply at the first sign of disease during the tillering to early flowering stage (Z26-Z62) and before there are more than 2 pustules per tiller. Ensure thorough coverage of stems and leaves.

Septoria Tritici Blotch (Mycosphaerella graminicola) - 250 to 500ml

  • Apply once between 70% flag leaf emergence and early flowering. Use the higher rate under high infection pressure or where longer residual protection is required.

Leaf Rust (Puccinia recondite f.sp. tritici; Puccinia triticina) - 150 to 500ml

  • Apply after flag leaf is 70% emerged and before disease levels reach 1% of flag leaf area. Consider control if disease is greater than 5 to 10% on any lower leaf layer. Use higher rates under high infection pressure or when longer residual protection is required. Lower rates are effective under low disease pressure but have reduced residual effect. Ensure thorough coverage.

Septoria Nodorum Blotch (Phaeosphaeria nodorum) - 150 to 500ml

  • Apply after flag leaves are around 70% emerged if infection averages 10% on the flag-2 leaf. The high rate of application gives a longer period of protection than the lower rates. Use higher rates on high potential crops when conditions favour severe disease development during flowering. Lower rates are effective under low disease pressure but have reduced residual effect. Ensure thorough coverage.

Yellow Spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) - 250 to 500ml

  • Apply once between 70% flag leaf emergence and early flowering. Use the higher rate under high infection pressure or where longer residual protection is required. Apply after 70% flag leaf emergence and before disease levels reach 5% on flag leaf. Higher rates give longer residual protection and often better economic returns.

Not to be used for any purpose, or in any manner, contrary to this label unless authorised under appropriate legislation.

Withholding periods

  • Grazing: Do not graze or cut for stock feed for 21 days after application
  • Harvest: Do not harvest for 6 weeks after application
  • Export slaughter interval: Do not slaughter animals destined for export within 7 days of consumption of treated cereal forage or straw
