The Angus Society of Australia increase the profitability of its members and customers through the delivery of innovative programs that enhances and promotes the value of Angus cattle and Angus beef products.

The Society carry out activities which advance the interests of the Australian Angus-based cattle industry such as:

  • maintaining the Breeding Registers and any other pedigree and performance records needed for the genetic advancement of Angus-based cattle
  • increase Members' ability to develop and produce world-leading Angus-based cattle and related genetics
  • increase Members' ability to market world-leading Australian Angus-based cattle and related genetics
  • increase Members' ability to produce and market world-leading Australian Angus-based beef and related animal by-products
  • establish relationships with other organisations whose purpose is to improve and promote the beef cattle industry

The Society's strategies focus on Angus breed development; marketing; education, extension and youth development and organisational support.

According to the Society, there are 7 reasons to breed Angus cattle:

  1. Market demand: Domesticc and export markets currently pay a premium for Angus cattle
  2. Market versatility: Angus have the ability to grown to heavy market weights quickly without becoming over fat
  3. Superior fertility and maternal ability: Angus have a reputation for maintaining high fertility even underdifficult seasonal conditions. Angus cows are excellent mothers with good milking ability
  4. Meat quality: Comes from their ability to lay down intra-muscular marbling (taste) fat during the finishing phase, together with excellent tenderness, texture, flavour, meat colour and fat colour
  5. Hardiness and efficiency: Angus cows are hardy enough to look after their calves and still go back in calf in dry, tough years. There are no cancer eye problems with Angus or their crosses
  6. Best all round balance: Angus are used in crossbreeding programs for their maternal ability, market value, carcase quality andfor their growth and hardiness
  7. Large documented gene pool: The large number of Angus animals provides an immense pool of available genetics that allows the breed to respond to new challenges and commercial demands.
