Premium Vermiculite Soil Conditioners from Exfoliators (Aust)

Supplier News

Exfoliators (Aust)  manufactures five grades of vermiculite from two ore sources: the Palabora mine in South Africa and AVI's mine in Australia.

Vermiculite is a naturally-occurring mineral called hydrated phlogopite mica. Once it is mined, graded and subjected to a furnacing process at approximately 800°C, it is ready for application as soil conditioners.

Premium vermiculite is sterile, inert as well as pH neutral and provides very good water-holding capacity along with good thermal insulation, which is important in seed raising applications.

The company assists with the selection of the correct variety of vermiculite products and sizing for specific needs.

Grades offered in vermiculite include:

  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 3 Sieved
  • Grade 3 Unsieved
  • Grade 4

Choice of sizing in these soil conditioners depends on the grower’s preference who can use G2 or G3 for seed raising.

Premium vermiculite soil conditioners are used to top dress the trays, providing good water holding capacity as well as good thermal insulation.

Grade 3 premium vermiculite can also be used in potting mixes along with peat moss or other media.

Grade 4 premium vermiculite is used in the propagation and callusing of grape vines.

Premium vermiculite can absorb up to 240% of its air dried weight in moisture providing a safe environment during transit. Vermiculite also has a cation exchange rate of 90-125 milligrams equivalent per 100 grams.

Premium vermiculite can also be used for many industrial applications such as:

  • Insulation
  • Passive fire protection
  • Kitty litter
  • Spill absorbent products

Premium vermiculite is packed in 100-litre polypropylene bags with a plastic inner liner to protect the vermiculite until its intended use.
